👉 Good news! An update from the US Department of Education
Together with the other European Edtech Alliance members we have been working hard to create a Response to Dear Colleague Letter regarding third-party services, and their lobbying efforts are paying off.
The Department of Education has announced that they:
Intend to remove the provision of the guidance document pertaining to foreign ownership of a third-party servicer.
Will review public comments on areas of confusion or concern and consider clarifying and narrowing the scope of the guidance in several areas, including software and computer services, student retention, and instructional content.
This is a significant win for European Edtech and you can read more about it in this article.
👉 Recent reports have highlighted the need for increased cybersecurity measures in K-12 schools worldwide as they increasingly rely on EdTech products.
A study by the University of Chicago and New York University found that many EdTech products used by schools extensively track student data, potentially compromising their privacy and security. Meanwhile, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has released best practices for K-12 schools, including investing in multifactor authentication and regularly conducting risk assessments. Educators worldwide should take note of these findings and prioritize cybersecurity measures to protect their students' data. Read more in these articles of EdSurge and EdTech Magazine.
