Dutch EdTech Newsletter: US Department of Education's New Guidance May Impact Non-US-Based EdTech Companies
Insights and Trends
Keeping up with the latest in education technology
👉 We wanted to bring to your attention a recent development in the US higher education sector. The US Department of Education has issued new guidance that may impact non-US-based higher education EdTech companies that work with federally-funded US institutions. Under this new guidance, US institutions may no longer work with service providers that operate from outside the country and/or are owned and/or operated by non-American citizens.
We are currently discussing this matter with the European EdTech Alliance to bring out a shared statement. If you are being influenced by this development or have any thoughts to share, we encourage you to reach out to us via this brief survey. Find the published “Dear Colleague Letter” here and read more about this topic via the EdTech Edge which is also sharing some in-depth articles. We will keep our community updated once we know more.
👉 Nordic countries are prioritizing textbooks over digital resources in education, despite the global trend towards AI and digital learning. Government ministers in Sweden and Denmark are concerned about excessive screen time for students, and Danish researchers suggest that digitization has gone too far. The former Norwegian digitization minister even suggested banning mobile phones in class. This raises the question of why there is a discrepancy between Nordic countries and the rest of the world in terms of digital learning. Read more about this topic in Hannes Aichmayr's post or the Nordics EdTech newsletter.

👉 Check out this article about a new meta-analysis that challenges the notion that flipped learning improves student outcomes. The analysis considered 173 studies of flipped learning and concluded that the implementation of the model is not living up to its promise. Instead, many instances of flipped learning involve more time spent on passive learning than the traditional lecture model. The authors argue that flipped learning has merit if it is done carefully and end their paper by presenting a model of flipped learning they refer to as “fail, flip, fix and feed,” which they say applies the most effective aspects they learned from their analysis.
